I've been working on transforming my writing office into a place where various other forms of creativity can converge. It's taken me days to rearrange the furniture and I'm still stepping over stacks of supplies waiting to be put up on shelves: fabric and patterns and sewing notions; paper for making photo albums and greeting cards; soap making and aromatherapy bath-salt stuff; a few jars of beads and a box containing my jewelry-making tools.
Up until now this office space has been set aside for submitting my writing to contests and journals and agents and establishing a platform in pursuit of the goal of getting my work published. I'm changing it into something resembling a little gift shop.
It doesn't sound like this has anything to do with writing, but it does.
Some might think of it as feeding the artist, others as caring for the soul. I call it owning up to who I really am: someone who's happiest making gifts for family and friends. And planning menus and cooking, but I find that's best done in the kitchen. And writing--all of these things and in no particular order.
I am talking about doing something for love.
So I'll be spending time in a completely different place in 2011, though it's still at the same address. Here's wishing everyone a very Happy New Year, and I hope you'll all stop by and see me at Studio Nita Lou.
I'll be the one with the big smile on my face.
